It’s purpose was to guide sailors to the harbor during the night. It earned it’s place among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by being, for centuries, one of the tallest man-made structures, with a variously estimated height of 120-140m. The tower guided sailors during night time using fire and reflective mirrors, but acted as a landmark during day time. Some say the tower could be seen from up to 47km away, and legend had it that Pharos’ light could burn enemy ships before they could reach the harbor.
